I recently spent a couple of days at a resort 2 to 3 miles east of Puerto Barrios Guatemala. It looked like it was built around the ruins of a old spanish fort, very nice. But later, while talking to some locals in Puerto Barrios and Santo Tomas, I was told that it was all fake and that there was never a fort there. It was all built in 1998. Has a Marina, but only one sailboat was tied up there. A fuel dock also. Curious to know if anyone knows the true story of this place. Real ruins or fake.

Yes, it was very expensive by local standards. Though a bargain by US standards. It was nice. Kid friendly lots of pools. I post some pic's in case someone's in the area. Most hotels in puerto barrios are pretty crappy.

Amatique Bay Resort is the name. I have only been there once,,,,beer was 5 dollars US.. ( I passed but buddy bought one for me, he was recently from the states so was not in shock). It is across the bay from Puerto Barrios and is a big cruise ship destination for the area. It was over a year ago and I do not recall seeing any slips there. Depth looks to be 8-10 feet thru most of it. I am sure if there are slips there the prices would be outrageous for this area. I am not aware of a fort ever being there so tend to believe it is false. The only one I ever heard of in this area is Castilla de San Felipe de Lara...

Same as the resort. Anatique Hotel/Resort/Marina. I drove there, so Im am not sure what this place is about.Depth entering etc is all a mystery to me. I was hoping someone in the Rio Dulce area may have some info on this place.
