Time does go by Bob.. but in my case not fast enough. Still about 2' of snow drifted aro8und my boat. Well I started skiing again after about 10 years not. Hope to ski about one more time have a week or so for yard work then be able to start the boat. Teaching middle school must be worse than crossing the atlantic. But I also spent my life working with kids and I do miss that alot. Just dont miss the systems around them to deal with. I really have become a single handed sailor in my outlook on many things. That has its strengths but also makes it harder to interact and less tolerant of others often. Pax.. Steve
Bob, I am not on here much. Are you in NC? I have several non sailing friends there. My mentor and cousin is in Beaufort. Is your boat up for the season or for work? I am hoping to sail into the Maritimes this summer and maybe head south again in a couple of years.. if I have any money left. Pax Steve
Great to hear about your first crossing from Beaufort to the Azores with your step son. When I left Norfolk, Va. with my oldest son that was age 25 at that time, it was my first time to really go offshore for more than a 24 hour period. I know what you mean about the magic of the Azores in that part of it was finding land again after a long voyage. We took 6 days to Bermuda, and then 24 days from there to Flores. We had a brush with Hurricane Danny and TD Danny at about 38 deg N which was quite an added bonus for our trip. The Cape Horn vane steered us through it all and we made it.
Ok on your Pearson 30 out of the Bahamas and now on your Vancouver 32. Understand the hot bunk routine. Our only comfortable bunk was the cabin sole where we had sever cushions and where I could actually stretch out being 6' 5".
Both your ideas about Mexico and the Costa Rica area are very enticing to me as well. Have spent a little time in Costa Rica but not on a boat and do want to go back someday. Never been to Mexico but hear stories of the challenges of check in and out in each port, but it still might be worth it.
I met a guy in the Azores that I heard later bought a Westsail 32 but haven't heard from him in several years. His name was Steve also. He had crossed in a small 28' Cape Dory but fell in love with the Westsail. It has very good speed in good wind and keeps moving in 8 kts of wind.
I too loved the Azores. Never sure how much of that was just gratitude for seeing land after a long slow passage(27 days from Beaufort). I too sailed to the Azores with my foster son as I had not ever done an offshore passage. Unfortunatly my Vancouver 32 is really set for single handing and we had to hot bunk when the seas were rough. I had a wonderful time and like you hope to get off again hopefully next year. but in this hemisphere. Not sure where to head either into the great lakes or maybe down to Mexico Costa Rica area.. Spent tonight having dinner with a sailor just in from Panama who is crossing to europe as soon as he gets sorted. We both topped off our propane and diesel today. I hope to sail up the east coast starting sometime this week. In 1991 my daughter and I left the Bahamas in company with a Westsail 32 that was completing a circumnavigation. My Pearson 30 got in a bit ahead of them. But they are a wonderful boat. This guy I was talking with tonight circumnavigated in one too. Well late need to get stuff moved and sorted and thrown out and stowed tomorrow. Pax Steve SV Gandalf
