Great to hear about your first crossing from Beaufort to the Azores with your step son. When I left Norfolk, Va. with my oldest son that was age 25 at that time, it was my first time to really go offshore for more than a 24 hour period. I know what you mean about the magic of the Azores in that part of it was finding land again after a long voyage. We took 6 days to Bermuda, and then 24 days from there to Flores. We had a brush with Hurricane Danny and TD Danny at about 38 deg N which was quite an added bonus for our trip. The Cape Horn vane steered us through it all and we made it.
Ok on your Pearson 30 out of the Bahamas and now on your Vancouver 32. Understand the hot bunk routine. Our only comfortable bunk was the cabin sole where we had sever cushions and where I could actually stretch out being 6' 5".
Both your ideas about Mexico and the Costa Rica area are very enticing to me as well. Have spent a little time in Costa Rica but not on a boat and do want to go back someday. Never been to Mexico but hear stories of the challenges of check in and out in each port, but it still might be worth it.
I met a guy in the Azores that I heard later bought a Westsail 32 but haven't heard from him in several years. His name was Steve also. He had crossed in a small 28' Cape Dory but fell in love with the Westsail. It has very good speed in good wind and keeps moving in 8 kts of wind.
