Congrats.....my cats enclosed src="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2472738998?profile=original" alt="" width="1280" height="960"/>
Way back in the early and mid 70s I was involved with a boat named Athena in a couple of curious ways.
When I got my first job on a boat, as a deckhand on a dinner cruise vessel here in Fort Lauderdale when we would be returning from our lunch cruise we would pass a 65' sailboat named Athena. On sunny days there would be a very attractive lady sunning herself on deck, and of course, since all men are pigs, we would get out the binoculars and scope her out.
A couple of years later a friend of mine bought Athena and I spent a winter living aboard and painting her.
A couple of years after that, one of my brothers married the girl who used to sun her self on Athena's deck. We've laughed about the fact that I was one of the guys with the binoculars more than once in the retelling of the story over the years.
I'm not into superstition at all when it comes to renaming boats. When I bought my Kaiser 26 (a wonderful, rare, honest bluewater pocket cruiser) it was named Little Dipper. Now, that's an okay name, but just OK.
Years ago reading through the Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea I came across the entry for Nancy Dawson. That's the name of the tune to which the rum ration was piped in the British Navy for over 200 years. I said then that if I ever had a boat worthy of a name that's what it was going to be.
I changed the name immediately without fanfare or ritual and she didn't seem to mind at all. In fact, I think she loved the new name. We single-handed from Ft. Lah dee dah to the Rio Dulce and back without incident in a nine month vacation and I lived on her for another six years.
It's NOT true that one of the happiest days in a boat owner's life is when he sells the boat. I hated doing it, but financial embarassment and a woman forced me into the situation. Now both the boat and bitch are gone and I'm searching for a new boat on which to sail into my retirement.
Ahoy Jen,
I like your blog. I am restoring a 1933, Charles Mower designed 50' wooden classic built at Hodgden Brothers Boatyard in East Boothbay Maine. I also work on boats as well as Captain them and teach sailing. You are doing great work.
With smiles and smiles to go.....

I just wanted to say that I admire you. Not many women take the step to liveaboard, much less singlehand. I will be there myself someday when the govt stops moving me around the country;-) I wouldn't mind a sailing trip to FL.
Hi Jen,
Thanks again for your comments on the Cruising Florida West Coast discussion. I went to your blog and I also had a look at the charts for the Ten Thousand Islands area. Looks like the kind of place I'd like to visit.
Gary
Where is your boat in Punta Gorda. My boat is in Barry's marina on Allegator Creek where I am doing some repairs. Hopefully she will be relaunched shortly and will move to Ft Myers City Yacht Basin. There my boat pug, Queen Olivia, and I will move back aboard.
So let's meetup at the Slip Knot or the Irish Pub and tell lies about sailing adventures. Merry X-mas.
The way things are looking we could be "buddy sailing" as Cayo Mio is still on the hard in Allegator Creek! Hopefully she'll get launched today and I will move her before Christmas, but I'll keep you informed.
Who knows perhaps we could crew for each other on this one as long as you promise to not keelhaul me!! I'm fragile you know.
Merry Christmas,
Capt Tom & Queen Olivia
PS Olivia appreciated the complement, but don't do it too often as she Iunlike myself) can be extremely demanding. My phone number is: 774 269-6423 in case you need anything.
Have an enjoyable trip and I look forwrad to talking with you more about nearby destinations. I'm so new to the area I have no idea where I can go. I am looking to meet-up with friends from my passage down from Boston in either the Keys or Bahamas as soon as Cayo Mio is put back together.
I had to repair her transmission and rudder this time. So while she was out I refaired and painted her bottom. So hopefully she is ready for another several 1000 miles of cruising.
Enjoy you Christmas and we meet soon almost neighbor.
Hey Jen, I have my boat on the hard at Glades boat storage. I was in the Mooring field in Ft. Myers Beach all last year, was a fun place but not Key West. Sorry I missed your post about finding crew, I would have loved to have done that.
Hi Jen,
I'm in the same boat so to speak. I live in Gold Coast Queensland Austraila. Always looking for a sail buddie. When we go up the coast here it is often night sailing due to distance between ports. I have done some sailing out of your area in a Manta. (Bahamas) Did Panama canal in a 38 mono and about Mustique in a 52 mono. I have a seawind 1160.
I will fly to Cuba last two weeks of May and be in Florida first two weeks of June. Can swop those around. If you wanted to go some where at that time I am happy to help. I would visit prior for you to check me out. If it works you would be welcome to crew for me on a trip here.
