Current location:
South Florida
Destinations visited:
US West Coast, Mexico's West Coast, Central America, Panama, Yucatan Peninsula, British Virgin Islands, Chesapeake Bay, Florida up and down the ICW.
Looking to:
Cruise more extensively in Panama and the San Blas Islands, more Caribbean and possibly the east coast before heading off to the South Pacific.
Man ...I cant tell you how much I enjoy reading my Cruisingcompass emails ! They are the bomb ....one of my liveaboard neighbors turned me on to them ..and I got hooked enough to sign on for the newsletter myself. You guys rock! Welcome to Seaknots ...and may you enjoy the breeze here!
Noticed you're interested in spending more time in Panama and the Camarca de San Blas. I spent 2 and 1/2 years hanging out with the Cuna. Bought hundreds upon hundreds of molas to sell in the States. Met a wonderful young Cuna named Braulio Henry on Wechubwala (sp?) who served as our translator. Braulio sailed to California aboard a large sailing yacht and hung out in southern California until Immigrations caught up with him. Despite his misadventures in the US, he is a great ambassador for the San Blas. He speaks Cuna, Spanish and English. Probably married now with children. Haven't seen him for many years (pre-Internet days). He's definitely worth looking up for a local guide.
Sorry, all are long gone. But every time I visit shoreside family and friends I am delighted to see that every one of them have molas, or Colombian cortinas, or Haitian folkart paintings, or Peruvian incised gourds, or Quechua llama-wool tapestries hanging on their walls, draped over chairs or tables. It brings back many memories. I am grateful for the fact that I live on a sailboat and suffer no obligation to collect and store large amounts or stuff. The only thing I collect these days is navigational charts and fishing lures! (Smile)
Hi, Tell me more of the eyes on the boats...any pictures of? I'm in Minn with family at the moment, and really want to sign onto your magazine...more later...Lola
I'm currently being kept VERY busy writing marina reviews for The Atlantic Cruising Club guide book to marinas. I'm doing reviews for the New England / Rhode Island 8th edition.
I also write a monthly piece for Long Island Boating World. Another fun gig!
Hi Nancy. Looks like you have been pretty busy. I propbly mentioned it already, but I can't help it..your photos are so beautiful. I can't wait to see the next ones that you add.
Hi really funny......saw Mamma Mia......sailboat was featured, but also thought of you...a man had eyes on his KNEES....just reviewed more of your photos...lovely....Lola
You've got some nice pics here yourself. Whales, dolphins and wrecks oh my! Those locations make me jealous (and motivated). Nice boat, is that a Bristol?
Good for you! (Antigua Sailing Week) We'll have to miss it, though. We're already on our way up to the Virgins to prepare for the Atlantic Crossing. Wish you could join us at our departure party May 2 in Tortola!
I am curious as to your experiences in Antigua. Besides the great gelato, what did you think of the venue, and the parties? I have found that there was way too much late night stuff going on that detracted from the overall regatta. maybe with Stanford dropping out as a sponsor it was a better time this year. and, interested to know where you publish so I can have a look at your "in print" opinions.
I have raced for many years, first time in Antigua was 1990. what I have seen over time is that the regatta acitivities, supposed to be focused on sailing, are being reduced (for some) to just another reason to get drunk and party. I haven't raced in New England in 20 years so I am not sure what they are like any more. I think the dilution of racing in favor of alcohol soaked sunburnt bodies, coming for a "caribbean" experience is just a shame. I went to Heinekein in St. Maarten last year and I won't go back again. It was ridiculous how badly boats were handled, and how many collisions there were. From friends and photos I saw this year, it was awful once again.
I KNOW first hand how hard you work all day to race, and coming back in to blow off steam is really no excuse. It is also partly the doing of the local race committee/chamber of commerce or whatever because they know a night gig will attract more people/more money.
I'll check out blue water web site, thanks for the tip.
