Contract when hiring a captain

I was wondering if I should draft some kind of a contract when hiring a captain to help us with making a passage. What is the common practice? We need a qualified captain to help us with a passage from the Bahamas to Florida. We have found someone we think might work out but we are wondering if we should have some kind of written understanding. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ive taken a couple boats the other way without any problems, its actually a fairly easy trip.
