  • rob plaisance

    hello anybody there..................( crickets )
  • stvbryant

I have been in the process of getting ready to do a refit of my Cascade 36 Puff which was hull 21 from Yacht Constructors Inc. I want to put the aluminum toe rails that Cascade has used on many of her sailboats. I repeatedly called & emailed the new owner of Cascade Yacht LLC and received no response. After trying to run down may leads I found the Chinook Composites was the company that is still in the original location and that they still are happy to help Cascade owners when the can. They are going to be ordering toe rail in 25' length around the end of the year and should have it in stock shortly. David can be reached at david@chinookcomposites.com. He has been with chinook for several decades and doesn't think he will be leaving any time soon. What a nice guy he is
  • S/V Compadre

I just pulled the starboard aft toerail on Compadre. Have some rot in the shear clamp from water migration down the screws into it from the toerail and the stanchions. No good!!! I have to scarf in new timbers. Ugghh!
I am thinking of using penetrating epoxy in every hole, let it dry, then squirt boatlife in them before putting the screws back in.
How did you solve the issue?
  • Roy Gault

    Ok,, got it,,

  • Roy Gault

Roy  here in Charleston Oregon USA,, Just signed up,  Will be buying a 42' Cascade this winter/spring.. HAVE A 33  Yorktown now that is for sale..

Really like the Cascades build .

  • Doug Crombie

Anybody out there?  Not much traffic on this site!!  I own 2 Yacht Constructors boats and am writing and filming a documentary about the pioneering boat company.  Live in Portland, Oregon and a would like some contact with fellow Cascade/YC owners.

  • Jerry Lehner

    Hey Doug

How exciting!  There is life on this group after all.  I had looked all over the interweb for a Cascade owners group and this is the ONLY one I could find.  Just bought Cabernet last summer and haven't yet got that acquainted with her.  She's a 29' and number 337.  The other boats I have had are a 17' Montgomery and 19' Compac.  This one now is a bit of another world.  I'm down at St. Helens at Yacht's Landing Marina.

  • Brian Nappe

Hello, SV Omily here in Portland OR.  Cascade 36 hull #51, finishing major multi year refit, launched Mar 2014

  • Tim Hryciw

I own Maria Victoria a Cascade 42 hull number 49. I keep her on the north Portland harbor
    Tim
  • Edward Hart

I'm Ed Hart and own a 1964 Cascade 29. I just bought her and have not named her yet. I owned another 29, Hooligan, and circumnavigated in her. My boat is now on the hard in Rock Hall Maryland. According to the paper work, the hull was laid up in Japan. Does anyone know about that? I did not know that Cascade had
    Hulls made in Japan.
  • Jerry Lehner

Hi Ed.  Welcome to the group.  It would be great to get some conversations going about our boats.  So far no one has responded to each other much.  I'd love to glean from your voyaging experience in Hooligan.  For example, what did you use for a tender?

  • Edward Hart

Hi Jerry, I used a Avon Redcrest for a tender. Nice and small and compact. I had a 2 hp. Suzuki  outboard.  She was a KISS boat. not much in the way of equipment.

Had a hand GPS, stove, depth sounder, compass and a Monitor wind vane. Not much else.  I am going to go on some of the other forums and let the Cascade owners about this web page. see if we can get some action going here.

  • Edward Hart

Come on guys, let's get some conversation going here. Jerry I responded to you. Where did you go? How about we make a commitment to log in here once a week. That will be a start. I also have an Allied Seawind and belong to that group and it is going strong. It is set up so that when any member responds every member gets his email. Can this web site be set up the same way?
  • Doug Crombie

Ed, this is the least user friendly site I've encountered ever!!  Not easy to communicate, despite the desire and intention to do so.  I wonder if we can jump and find another forum or even start our own?  In he meantime, I'm in the conversation.  Doug Crombie,  1962 Yacht Constructors Chinook 34 AND 1966 Cascade 42.

  • Doug Crombie

Also, here's a link to a quickly edited preview of my film on Yacht Constructors.  The interview was done more than a year ago. Wade just turned 100!!

  • Edward Hart

Doug, I agree. The Allied Seawind group uses Yahoo Groups it seems to work pretty good. Or we could start our own. Wow, Wade is 100. I met him about 15 years ago. I just turned 80 in August.
  • Michael Mc Laughlin

    Just found the site:

Thanks to whoever got it going.

I own "Transcendence" a Cascade 36,  Hull number 19 and still going strong.

Sailed her from Kinsale in Ireland to the Carribean in 2010 and spend some of the winter months cruising the Islands.

Had some awful weather in the Bay of Biscay in December 2010 but Cascades are a great boat!

She is in Antigua, on the hard, at the moment and we will sail up to the BVI's this coming January.

I've been trying to contact Fred Keith who owns the C42 "Sanctuary" which used to be in Florida. If anyone can put us in touch I'd appreciate it.

  • Scott MacManus

Hello everyone!  Very excited to find this group...hope it's active!  I have a Cascade 29, Hull#18 that I am outfitting for spring sailing...if all goes well.

  • Tim Hryciw

    Welcome
  • Thomas panter

Hello, I am the new owner of a 1965 cascade 29. Does anybody have any info as to whether bulkheads were owner installed or manufacturer. I ask because the main bulkhead in mine is joined to hull with Very small strips of glass. Only a few inches. And only one layer. It seems to have pulled away in a few spots and although an easy fix(no rot in bulk head) I wonder about the way it was attached initially. Given how strong the hull is I can't believe the manufacturer would skimp on this joint if it was critical to structural integrity, however if owner installed and not structural I am not as concerned. To fix it all I need to do is adjust my stand and re-bond it to the hull. I will be doing a bit more thorough glass job than what was there initially. This boat is nowhere near mint condition but has the potential to be a very pretty and fun boat for me and my family here on lake champlain. Thanks for any info.
  • john simpson

Thomas: Maybe you've already done this project.

Here's how I handled the same issue on my ol' 36, Koru.

Grind the surfaces, with 36 grit, about 4 inches back from the center of the joint. (angle grinder is quick, but messy).

Cut strips of good heavy E glass cloth (about 12 oz) , 8 inches wide for the length necessary, ON THE BIAS. That way, they'll lay in nice and flat.

Cut two more layers, progressively narrower, at 6 and 4 inches wide.'

Mix up a thickened dose of polyester and lay a nice fillet into the corner of the joint area. Use cardboard cut to make the radius.

Allow this to set up, but not fully cure, then paint a coat of polyester onto the surface.

Lay in first the 8 inch, then the 6 & 4 inch cloth strips, wetting thoroughly to remove all bubbles and any creases. I made them neater by adding a little strip of fine mesh along the very edges, just to finish it off.

Should be good to go after all, that's they way the factory did it; I watched them.

  • S/V Compadre

Great Video Doug Crombie! How much more footage do you have? Any of the old factory or Hanz? I'm also in PDX and would love to hook up with you guys, maybe have some beers and talk Cascades!

  • Doug Crombie

always open for coffee or a sandwich.  Retired now.  Email me on dcmmprod@gmail.com

  • Edward Hart

I am just checking in.  I'm looking for a diesel for my 29. Price range around $3000. used.  I have an old Palmer gas in her now. If anyone wants it,free let me know. but it is in Maryland.

  • Scott MacManus

This is great info on the history of the Cascade 29.   I have Hull #18.  I also started at list of all the hulls I could find of the 29s on a previous webpage...got quite a few.  Can post it if anyone is interested.

  • Edward Hart

Scott, I would like to have the info that you have on the 29;s I have one but I can't find the hull number. The hull was laid up in Japan 1964.

  • Edward Hart

Well, after a year, work has finally started on my 29.  I found an engine. A 3GM30 Yanmar. The old Palmer gas was taken out today. In a week we will be back in the water, with a new engine. The Yanmar is a new engine never been installed in a boat. It sat in someone's garage for 15 years.

  • Ray Brown

Has anyone been able to contact the new owners of the company?  I would like to add the sugar scoop stern with the storage compartment.  Our intention is to join the cruising ranks in 2017 and would love this last addition to Breezin' prior to departure.  Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Ray

  • Michael Mc Laughlin

I'm thinking of selling my Cascade 36 "Transcendence" which is in the Caribbean.

Great boat, lots and lots of equipment, in good condition and 2 TransAtlantics under her keel.

If anyone is interested let me know and we can discuss.

Stents are concentrating my mind on the things that need doing.

    Michael

  • Edward Hart

I am looking for a set of plans for a Cascade 29. I am going to post this all over the net to see if anyone has a set.
  • Doug Crombie

Ray, I forwarded your request to a Cascade resource I use here in Oregon, Becker Enterprises. Here is the reply:Doug,

Thanks for the note.  However, we do not have any of the Cascade “sugar Scoop” stern modifications.  Tom suggested that the Cascade Yacht  Works   503 440-0233    485 SE 5th St. Warrenton, OR  97146
Russell@CascadeYachtWorks.com   is supposed to have all those molds.  We have never had any contact with them, and wish you luck in your quest.
We have very limited items from Yacht Constructors.  Modified dodger mold, 36 rudder mold, and a 36 stern hatch mold.   We repair them, and custom make whatever parts we usually need.  We’ve repaired/modified 7 Cascade 36 yachts, two Cascade 42 yachts- one low side and one high side.  And built two Cascade 27’s, and repaired two more.
But we didn’d save much in the way of spare parts.
Hope you find what you need.
  • Ray Brown

Thanks for the follow-up.  I sent hem an email and am hoping for a response.

    Cheers!

hawaii%20sailing%20002.JPG Tracker%20Round%20Trip%202015.PNG   For anyone contemplating an ocean crossing with a Cascade 36, just wanted to share two items I incorporated, that were really useful on a recent round trip to Hawaii.

I made a deck, to cover the life raft, so I could store it in the cockpit and thus make it easier to launch if I had to. I also added two 4 inch cockpit drains, through the transom. We took a couple of waves, over the quarter, and it drained instantly. seldom did we get water sloshing back in from astern.

I added a "backwards" tiller too, which enabled us to keep the Monitor lines out of the cockpit, and tilt the tiller out of the way.

I need some advice on the chain plates of my Cascade 36. They are the type which were embedded in the fiberglass hull roving. I have been pretty diligent about keeping them properly caulked, so that salt water would not migrate down there and cause any crevice corrosion however.....I have no idea what any previous owners did. I have noticed some corrosion, around the little stubs that stick through the roving, inside but looks like nothing serious.

Problem is, I can't see whether there is any internal deterioration or not. The boat was built in 1975 and has had a few coastal trips, plus the ocean voyage I just did, to Hawaii.

What prompted me to think about this was the recent failure, encountered by the McHaffy's, on their Hardin 45, which had a similar arrangement. I am planning another offshore trip and would love to keep the mast upright!

Does anyone know how long these last or how to best inspect them, or have any experience replacing them??

Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Shaun Lynch

    Happy Holidays everyone!

Just joined the group and thought I would share some of my experiences with the brand. I owned a 1976 Cascade 29 (HIN 4CS293320576) from 1989-1992 and named it "Storm Bird". Sailed on Columbia River and worked on it on the hard at the 42nd Ave boatyard. Hans, Wade, and all the staff were so friendly and helpful to me...I will never forget.  Before buying my 29, I crewed on a Cascade 36 from Portland to Grays Harbor and return in September 1988. That boat was a documented vessel " Breezin' " . Cannot recall the name of the owner at the time, but it had a light blue hull, a sugar scoop and deep racing keel.  Cheers!

  • Brandon

    Is this site still active?

Just purchased 1976 Cascade 36 hull number 8! Does anyone know who this boat was originally build for?

  • Edward Hart

Brandon it is not very active

  • Michael Mc Laughlin

    Hi Brandon:

I have just sold my Cascade 36 hull number 19 and she was built in 1970.

It's a pity there is not more activity on the site as they are a superb boat.

Have a few health problems and would not have parted with her otherwise.

She was in Nanny Cay boatyard and was dismasted by a neighbouring boat falling over. Mast has been sleeved and she is away again cruising with her new owner.

Wish you the best with her   Enjoy.
