you are more interested in the passages than in the movie. how is that for simplifying it?? isnt a problem--some movies arent worthy of our time after such trivialities as ocean passages....

Great! I hope he enjoys the book. He should be able to use the index to look up English words, phrases! Tell him to let me know how it works for him.
This is a nice site - it will be fun to explore and I will definitely mention it to other friends.
By the way, Imray is now carrying the new edition, so it should be easier to get in Europe.

Franc,

Happy New Year and what's going on? I see you heard from Bill and that he successfully made it south. All good news.

Keep me apprised of plans, and also let me know what teWEB sites were that you used or getting wind info. Cayo Mio is hopefully going to be back sailing soon. The repairs have take much more time and effort than I ever imagined.

Franc, Sorry for the late reply. WiFi hasn't been the best and then my girl friend came for a few days - I guess during those days my mind was elsewhere :) I'm currently in Charleston, SC. I stayed here over the Holidays so I could have my visitor. I'll be leaving either tomorrow or Tuesday depending on the weather. From here the plan is to hop off shore to Amelia Island and then to do coastal day hops. I want to spend some time in the Keys so Jan and Feb the boat will be there - then hopefully up to the Bahamas. Hope your plans continue to be successful. ...Bill

Yes, she's a beauty! (and her previous owners took very good care of her!) That photo was taken in Riverside, prior to our 'journey' to Forked River.

Franc, it's very cool that you are from Barcelona.
All the places we went were when there were regattas. The boat I was on primarily was a 40' Farr named Ramel-Dos, owned by Manuel Martinez who owned the company RAMEL. Big company! The boat's maintenance port was El Masnou, where Toni Tio has a sail loft, and we often kept the boat at RCNB. Antonio Gorostegui from Santander was the skipper, and Juan Vila (Catala') was the navigator/mainsheet trimmer. We were on the Spanish National Team at the Sardinia Cup and 1-ton Worlds. Another fantastic series we did was La Vuelta de Espan~a, which we won. The ports on that regatta were, Santander for reassembly, near Bilbao for the start, Vigo, Lisboa, Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz), Estipona, Valencia, Sitges and finish in Palma. That was a great race and unbelievably fantastic party ashore at all the stops. And we won. And Ramel-Uno (Vicieras design) was chartered by Hola magazine. Hola Magazine hired an all female crew to race the boat. WE, had a great time!
We probably stopped at nearly every port along the coast North of Barcelona as far up as Loret de Mar or maybe Palamo's and only Sitges south of Barcelonas. We often were racing in Palma and I almost always stopped over in Andraitx
Also another Catalan I raced with was Pepin Gonzales, a great yacht designer and builder.
Franc, thanks for bringing back the memories.
You are in NYC now?

No, my Catalan is rock bottom.
The only two languages I'll admit to being able to speak is English (naturally) and Maritime Spanish. Regular Spanish is OK, French & Portuguese are next but I'll study for a month before a trip where I'll need to speak those languages.in 1986-88 I lived in Barcelona, El Masnou and Palma Mallorca, and 1/2 our race crew was Catalan. A few of the ships commands were in Catalan because of fewer and shorter words needed, and I would order food and drinks in Catalan when in Catalan owned restaurants. The boatyard in El Masnou was Catalan, so there was another opportunity to understand that language.
Therefore languages are a hobby and I probably spend at least 20 hrs a month reading and studying languages, mostly French & Italian these days for some planned travel in the next two years, but I dabble in a few others to help my perspective and thinking globally.
In my library I have Spanish-Catala', Spanish-Portugues, & Spanish-French dictionaries.
I guess I need a Spanish-Italian dictionary next. And the internet has taken over as a resource for languages.
When I saw David Comes Lorenzo's cute cute baby, I couldn't resist celebrating him with a congratulatory greeting in Catala'.
Did you spend any time in Catalunya?
