Well, my Tony of my Ownie, a special little beanny baby dog is perched up in the stern castle window ready to keep an eye on the following sea as we make the scariest part of the journey. With a west/southwest wind predicted for the next few days with light, variable to 10-15 knots this should be a breeze! What concerns me is the dern satellite phone. I can't seem to get it to work. Maybe I'm not patient enough holding it out under the satellite, maybe the directions aren't as clear as they should be, or maybe my phone is a dud. I don't know. I will keep it in the cockpit and mess with it as I journey on.
The three days at Portside Marina were worthwhile. The docking fees were very reasonable, the owner, Dennard has a great sense of humor, and gets things done. He is obviously in good terms with his fellow businessman. If you are ever in Beaufort or Morehead City North Carolina this is a good place to stop. Dennard also suggested I seek out a website called 'active captain.' Does anyone interact on this one?
It is now 8:00 pm so I need to close up shop and prepare for a first light departure. According to Chris Parker, weather router, I may have to motor from here to Hatteras. On the initial leg of my journey I burned 17 gallons of diesel. I check the fuel every four hours of straight running time or every two if I am using the engine intermittingly. After passing Hatteras if needed, I can duck into the Chesapeake and either head toward Norfolk. With luck though I'll be able to go straight through.
As a cruiser, I have slowed down my desire to get anywhere. Knowing I will eventually get there is fine. My only regret here is that I missed an opportunity to meet up with a friend of a friend while docked. Things happen for a reason and as my colleague Amy reminds us, "It doesn't get better than this."
Life is good, be kind, and be safe,
