About Me:

I have been in and around sailboats and the water for most of my life, starting when I took my first sailing lessons along the shores of Maine at the age of 5. I had the good fortune to have a world-class ocean racer & America's Cup sailor as my sailing coach and teacher during high school, where I sailed as crew on Rhodes 19s, 470s, 420s, and auxiliaries, working the foredeck and handling the spinnaker in scholastic regattas. An apprenticeship in the North Atlantic aboard the 115 foot staysail schooner R/V Westward in 1976 provided both classroom studies and hands-on experience with large and small diesel engines, coastal and offshore navigation, marlinspike seamanship, and large boat sail and boat handling.

My wife and I have owned sailboats for all of our 25 year marriage, starting with a 14’ open day sailor, and have chartered boats from 27 to 44 feet in Central America, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Maine. As a “DIY” boat owner, I have learned over the years to service and maintain most marine systems as our boats have increased in size and complexity (I brought with me troubleshooting and electrical/electronics skills earned in a career in high tech field service and computer consulting). At home in Austin, Texas we sail our Catalina 30, at least when I’m not working on one or another of her aging systems.

We bought our dream boat in 2006 - a beautiful and well maintained Cheoy Lee Clipper 42 named Izurde - and have kept her Down East while we prepare for the time when our kids leave the nest, after which we plan on cruising with her around the Caribbean and North and South American coasts. As part of the preparation for that, I have been crewing on deliveries since 2005.
