Tom,
I have a 222 MacGregor Venture also. Enjoy sailing on our reservoir here in Oregon. Lost Creek lake. Great little boat. I retired at 62 and am enjoying it. A little hard to find crew. Seems like every body is still working:-)
About the swing keel. We have the same problem up here. Need to get keel up to get on the trailer. My only thought would be to put her on the beach, bow first, and try to use the main halyard to tip her on side far enough to make temporary reattachment of cable. Usually carry some small line that might work as temp cable and a cable clamp or 2. You wouldn't need a very long piece of cable to secure the keel in an up position. Like you I've wondered too. Thought about replacing cable and bolt it swings on but haven't figured out how yet. Would probably need to suspend in a sling. Now if the backhoe is strong enough............
