I sail a Cape Dory 36 on the Great Lakes, mostly with my son, also David (we call him Davie). Ariel is a 1979 Carl Alberg design, as perfect as a boat can be. I fell in love with the design 30 years ago, but had to wait until 2002 to get one. I am married to Chris and we have a younger son (than Davie), Jonathan, who also likes sailing, but isn't a fanatic about it like his older brother and I are.
Destinations visited:
All over Lake Michigan. Every summer we go someplace new. Summer of 2008 it was Lake Charlevoix, Beaver Island and the north end of Lake Michigan. Before that it was Green Bay and Door County. Before that it was the east coast of Lake Michigan (the Michigan shoreline) and all the great little harbors.
In years past, I sailed the California coast, California to Hawaii and back, the Marshall Islands, the Chuuk Islands, the Florida Keys and San Francisco Bay.
Looking to:
Next summer, we're thinking about cruising the North Channel of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
David, Thanks for the reply and good advice. My kids are 12 and 10. They really enjoy sailing so far. ...and my wife is gradually beginning to enjoy it more. Family friendly places are good for us. However, we keep talking about hanging out around South Haven on 4th of July to watch fireworks. I prefer anchoring out but my wife and kids like the conveniences of a marina. The Merit 22 we sail is a bit small with limited facilities. ...so we'd consider both. I want them to continue to enjoy sailing.
Is it difficult to get slip in South Haven around July 4?
Thanks
-Derek
David, We'll have to check out St. Joe. My mom's family had a summer cabin there when she was a kid. I've never been but heard stories. So St. Joe would be a good place to visit. That's St Joe/Benton Harbor?
David, you have some nice pictures, where was the storm clouds taken? If your ever in white lake stop by crosswinds and look me up . I am there in slip 11 and Ken lewis in the same marina,
