My husband Don and I are currently in Oriental North Carolina to do a remodel of the interior of our boat so we can continue cruising. We have been cruising on SOUTHERN CROSS a 1974 Dickerson 41 ketch, the last woody that Dickerson built, since October 2002. If you are in Oriental, come by for a visit.
About the boat: The original owner, Neville and Louise Lewis with their son Chris took SOUTHERN CROSS around the world from 1975 to 1979. That was when there were real sailors! Went around with only a flasher depth sounder, a knot log, and sextant. My husband bought SOUTHERN CROSS from the Lewis' in 1984.
Current location:
Oriental, North Carolina
Destinations visited:
Some, but not all of the Great Lakes - Lake Erie, Lake Huron, north Channel, north Georgian Bay, upper Lake Michigan. Cruised the East coast of US from Cutler Maine around to the west coast of Florida up to Clearwater. Then the Dry Tortugas, the Bahamas - both the Abacos and the Exumas. We have stopped at the Spanish Virgins by Puerto Rico, US Virgins, British Virgins including Anagada, St. Martin/Sint Marten, Saba, Antigua, Guadeloupe, St. Barts, Dominica, Martinque, St. Lucia, Barbados, the Tobago Cays, Carricou, Grenada, Tobago, Trinidad, Venezuela (Marguerita, Puerto la Cruz, Aves, Roches...), Bonaire, Curacao, Cartagena Colombia, San Blas Islands, Portabello, and Bocas del Toro, Laguna del Bluefield of Panama. Then Alagarte Reef off the coast of Nicaragua and moved on to Guanaja and Roatan Honduras. Next up the Rio of Guatemala for interior exploring. Moving along to Big Creek, then Turneffe Reef, Middle Long Cay, Half Moon Cay, and Cay Caulker of Belize. Then it was back to the States for the first time in over two years for the SOUTHERN CROSS.
Looking to:
We are currently in the starting stages of remodeling the interior of the boat for future long distance cruising.
We want to visit new places, meet new people, and try new foods We want to keep cruising until it is no longer fun. To have no particular place to ,and plenty of time to get there.
Love your photos.. !!!!!!!
We had horse and rode them over part of Ontario, exploring, camping with them.
Now that part of our lives is history but the sailing will continue.
Love your boat.. You're living our dream.
Hi,
this is only our second year at the North Channel and we're in our 6th year of sailboat ownership so the learning process is on-going.
Loving every minute of it though. :-)
Since you like to ride, check out Tobermory as a stop. (Our personal favorite) It has been awhile but Harmony Acres used to come to the boat basin (marina) in the Tub and pick up folks that wanted to horseback ride and eat at their restaurant, which we did several times. The dock master, a German named Klaus, would call for us to arrange a time to be picked up. Harmony Acres has a camp ground there, so we were able to get cleaned up afterwords. Then on to a gourmet dinner prepared by the students from the local culinary school. We were introduced to the Pelee Island Winery Gewurztraminer (made in Ontario Canada) there at Harmony Acres. It went famously with the fish they served to us. It is a fabulous wine, our favorite Gewurztraminer.
I miss your email updates when you were traveling around and am now curious about how the new interior is coming along. Some day I hope to get to Oriental to see the progress for myself.
I am working on a blog site. It is a work in progress as I figure out out to do things. You are welcome to see the beginning stages. http://svsoutherncross.wordpress.com/
