Vail, CO But home is where ever Quietly and I are.
About Me:
For the seven years before retiring in 2002, I worked as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer at a Bank the high mountains of Colorado, and before that I owned a business for 18 years and traveled extensively visiting more than 50 countries.
"Live Slow ~ Sail Quietly" says a lot about the changes in my life after leaving the corporate world. I was one of those driven "A" type executives, so much so that it took me over a year to unwind to the point that an afternoon nap after a nice swim was ok. [laughing}
I spent an absolutely wonderful seven years in the Caribbean from 2002 to 2009 and look forward to returning in the future. For now I am living on my boat "Quietly" in Washington DC for a few years.
Current location:
Washington DC
Destinations visited:
I left the US East Coast in November of 2002 sailing first to Bermuda and on to the Caribbean. I have visited the US and British Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, Nevis, St. Kits, Montserrat, Guadalupe, Antigua, The Saints, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Bequia, The Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Venezuela.
After seven years in the Caribbean and many a summer in Grenada or Trinidad, I decided to spend the summer of 2009 sailing in New England. So in May 2009 I headed north to Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and now Florida.

I am not a crazy sailor out sailing every day. Far from it! I truly love the quiet life living aboard. It's a happily fulfilling, simple, and un-hurried life anchored among cruising friends and exploring new places.
I was recently contacted by my childhood sweetheart who read my posting here and the part about looking for a sailing partner. We have been friends and I a "big brother" to her since she came to visit my sister 50+ years ago.
We had not seen one another for 18 years when she read my profile here and called me astonished that I had described her perfectly as who I was looking for. We are looking forward to life and sailing together.
Thank you SeaKnots for helping get she and I together after so many years!
Dalton
Dalton, I read the description of your boat and you sure thought out what makes for comfortable and practical cruising. Bequia is a favorite spot of mine in the Caribbean. Are you there for awhile or just passing through?
bobbi
How's the weather in Bequia? Looking forward to returning to our boat in St. Vincent in a month or so. Only a part-timer, unfortunately... But as you know, summer in the CO mountains isn't so bad!
Great photo ! My homeport is Shinnecock Bay and I know the waters well betwen there and Montauk, Gardiner's Bay and Block Island... I strongly suggest you visit Block Island if you haven't.
If you want a local guide for that area and I'm around, I'd be happy to give you some tips and join you if I can.
Hi Dalton! Nope, wasn't in Antigua racing. Still figuring out sailing....only position I excel at in racing is railmeat, line coiler and sewer! LOL Newport is lovely in the summer and some of the best sailing here. Although you wouldn't want to be here today..pouring out..but had a wonderful sleep on the boat. Take care, Fair winds! Terri P.S. Sorry, 5'3...don't wear heels on the boat :-)
Good to hear from you. I have heard about some of the changes down in the Caribbean - sorry to hear about most of them. I'm glad to hear there are a few people still down there that I knew, but I know it's a whole new crew out there.
Wow, thanks for all the great information! I really appreciate it. Would those boat choices also be good for sailing down the west coast and over to Uruguay (Central/South America)? Does the lower mast really help?
What kind of boat is Quietly? Well, I read your profile and it's interesting. I went to college in Golden CO, spent some time in Louisiana (enough time), and am on the west coast ready to sail eastward. Spent 7 years working in the South Pacific and relaly want to visit Bali.
Yes, I went to CSM, chem engineering. But I'm in the environmental compliance world now. Doesn't pay well but I more or less sleep better at night. I don't live-aboard yet. Monterey Harbor's wait list is 25 years at least. Since I can't get a boat loan since I don't own a house or anything big, I'm saving for a boat. So I'll be looking at buying in the next year or so. Trying to hone my sailing skills, learn all the lingo, and find out all I can about what kind of a boat is best for bluewater cruising, not just a pocket cruiser. Who better to ask than people like you who are already doing it. I've been spending time racing on the Wed night beer cans but haven't done alot of cruising. I took my classes through BareBoat Charter but still think I'm need more teaching. But I'm getting more confident as time goes on.............
Welcome Home Dalton & hope you really enjoy your summer exploring the N.E. area. If one day you make your way up to the 1'000 Islands area, I would be pleased to be your host/guide. Currently single-hand my 27 ft sloop on L. Ontario having spent many years at the west end of the lake out of Toronto. A few years ago moved myself & boat down to the eastern end, considered by some to be the best freshwater sailing in the world. I hope to sell this boat and am actively searching for a more liveaboard to take me south for a few years. Have done some sailing in the Bahamas & BVIs, looking forward to exploring much more! Dianne
Hi! Welcome home! Beautiful this weekend, but chilly. I'm currently trying to heal a boat bite. Bruised ribcage last monday. Was suppose to sail this weekend and have renaming ceremony for my boat today. Cancelled till I'm better. Sitting at home watching Deadliest Catch for the "fix"..lol. Bored, bummed and twizzled in massachusetts :-( Hope to meet you soon! Terri
hi.. Welcome back ! .. and if you think Rhode Island is cold, wait til you get to Maine. You may want to pick up some long underwear before you take off... Good cruising .. Suky
Welcome back to the USA,Dalton. If you are in the Boston area at some point, give me an email, I would be glad to show you a little of Boston. I have been here for 7 years now onboard a pearson 424, so I kinda know the town alittle. Also have sail up the coast of Maine quite a bit.

Hi Dalton. Sounds like you're really enjoying yourself! We have a women's race this Saturday I'm really looking forward to. Your regatta sounds very exciting! We also have our annual Mermaid Regatta coming up for all the ladies. Lots of fun last year. Just got back from hiking and camping in the Colorado mountains. Fun! I climbed 13,600 ft peak. First time there was hail, snow, and wind. Who would have thought hail in August!?
I have just stumbled across your info: the Newport Jazz Festival probably caught my eye. I lived in RI for 14 years, and eventually ended up in St. Thomas, which is now my primary home. Came here as a liveaboard in 1989. I return to Cape Cod every summer, just left on July 5! Fleeing the rain and cold. We are a little out of sync on the schedule. I enjoy the Caribbean, the liveaboard lifestyle (although I am on land now). Favorite islands include Antigua for general sailing and Classics regatta.
You sound as if you are a very thought full person .. and that is not a typo!!. It would be interesting to hear back from you, I happen to be 5'4" etc. I am a reader, rather than movies, abhor the mall and shoe collections and have more interest in spending my money on fun as I have enough worldly goods, with the exception of no sailboat.
Enjoy the Jazz and all that RI has to offer. If it never got below 65F I would not have left in 1988,,
look forward to hearing from you when you get a chance,
Sorry to hear about the kidney stones. Ouch! I have good friends freezing on a mooring in Vero. The boat name is Our Dream, have you met them? Lunch sounds good...

I hope your surgery went well and you are back on Quietly feeling better. When are you going to be feeling well enough to sail further south?
