update- sold my cal jan 2010 moved to vista to be a homeowner. 18 mo without a boat and i couldn't stand it. i just bought a lancer 25ft and can sail again!! ps walk in closets are over rated
am a traveling nurse, i work close to home for now. i live on my cal 34 in redondo beach. the best thing about living on my boat is i can untie it and go out whenever i am in the mood. i don't have to plan and pack up, everything i'll need is on the boat already! i work 3 days/week 12 hr days so last week when i had 4 off in a row i took off and went over to catalina for 2 days by myself. its always an adventure, its very rare that i have left my slip and nothing has gone wrong while i'm out, usually an engine problem, a torn sail, a headsail that i can't drop in too much wind, a windlass that wont work when the anchor has been dropped already, etc. etc. i get an adrenaline rush from getting out of a problem situation. most would call my experiences disasters but i call them adventures!
Current location:
home in redondo beach,ca
Destinations visited:
i often go to marina del rey, cabrillo, catalina, san diego, newport beach, dana point, i have stayed in all of the harbors from mdr to san diego overnight a few times. its always the most exciting pulling in to a new harbor and looking for your gust slip in a marina your not familiar with, {in the dark is even more of a thrill, one i try to avoid now} last oct i went to mexico, my 27 yr old son joined me for 11 days and that story is a whole other book we lost power, tore both sails, only a solar panel to charge batteries, very little sun, lots of rain and a hard time heading north
Looking to:
someday, somehow take off and sail away! i guess i might need to find a partner, i probably need a better equipped boat, enough money to survive,....actually all that i do have in preparation for my dream is spirit!
Hi Deb! Theres nothing wrong with Spirit ...I think its what keeps all us sailors going when the going gets tough! Keep the dream alive ...you will sail there one day....
Hi Debbie, how would you compare your cal to the islander? i'm leanin toware the islander for coastwise and maybe sea of cortez. Thanks and keep on sailin!
pat, i think i would lean the same way. islander has always been one of my favorites. i think my previous islander felt stronger than my cal. there is a great site that you can go on and compare boats and actualy punch in the things most important to you and come up with a list of boats that fit your criteria. maybe you have already heard of it. its called sail calculator pro...let me know if you find the site.
I don't have any definite sailing plans right now. I am currently shopping for a 34-39 foot boat. Hopefully buy it before summer is over. Maybe some day sails till then. Right now I am a member of a sail club down here.
Yes, left Sarasota Fl in a 35' Morgan, sailed around the keys, stayed in Marathon a year, crossed to Bimini January 1998, cruised from there to the island chain and found a CT47' . I bought that and we sailed the islands in that for a few years, he left in March 2004 (the worst hurricane season!). I tried to find crew on the internet - another long story. Decided I needed to just do it myself - not easy on a 47' boat, but I did have self-tailing winches, thank goodness. Dodged a few hurricanes that year, had the boat up for sale but I kept moving so that was hard to do. Finally sold it in January 2007 in Venezuela.
I miss it very much, even now I want to be there instead of stranded on this sandbar. I found I didn't like being a singlehander - easy to be a bit of a hermit. It's not as fun alone and it's not as safe either, so I don't think I'd go out alone again. But definitely would go out again if I found a compatible partner who really wanted to go.
Hi,Great page! nice places you've sailed to also.
I dream of the day I can watch my dock-lines slip off the cleats, pour a cup of strong coffee and sail off to a destination I've seen on National Geographic or heard stories of!
I too hope to meet someone who shares the sense of adventure and the love of salt-spray.Mike
hi mike, how are you? any adventures planned this summer? i can't believe june is almost over, i LOVE summer. maybe someday i'll be able to go where its always summertime.
Nothing in the works currently,I spent a month(Jan.15th-Feb.14th)going from St,Augestine to the keys and then back to Titusville with a buddy.Pulled the old girl out of the drink for some paint, sails and electronics upgrades.
Now I'm out of vacation time(and low on money)
Thats why I can't wait to retire.
Unlike many yacht-clubbers,I'm a blue collar guy.Proud, but poor!
i miss the crossing from king harbor to catalina. lotsa memories. my first singlehanded sailing experince (adventure) was getting rolled around in good pacific seas with lotsa rain and fog. ahhh the memories.
Debbie if i can help ya out , about any boat projects let me know . i also have a cabinet shop , were i try to build most of the projects then install them , but feel free to hit me up on anything , later Rich
Hi Debbie
I sail the frigid waters of the north atlantic off Newfoundland Canada.Am very envious of anyone who can sail the warmer climes. Will retire in a couple of years and plan to sail south.Glad to see you're living the dream, great pix and good tunes.

New to this site and am impressed with it so far. You are most fortunate to have your work schedule AND your skill set. Good sailing to you and congrats on your fantabulous spirit. Isn't having sails blow out great fun11 did you fix onboard or bring it back with your?
How much stress does it put on the sail if someone sits on the boom using the mainsail to relax? Looks like fun and something my 13yr old would love but I thought I would ask before I do it.
Hi, I'm near Palm City - sailing a catamaran. If your son needs a set of hands on his new boat, I'd be happy to help for a few days. ASA certified and USCG licensed stu@shearwater-sailing.com
Hi Debbie,

Debbie,
You are right...lots of work. However, as I was reading your reply my wife looked over my shoulder and reminded me of something. A few years ago I was with a friend at a boat show talking to a boat builder who does lots of restorations. When he heard that I had a CAL 34 he commented that she was definetly worth spending time and money. However, my friend who had a Islander 36 did NOT get such a favorable comment.
Debbie,
What an awesome profile, and welcome. I have been a want-to-be liveaboard for 3 years or better, but here in the cold and snowy northeast, it isn't that pleasant. I agree with all you have said about what freedom it gives you! Sailing in San Diego myself only for 4 hours, I know that you have some of the best weather area to cruise in. Best to you and godspeed with your dreams!
Robin
I've "spoken" with Gary several times and suggested marinas closer to the PBI airport (and me) so I can help him if he needs another set of hands or every imaginable tool. In either case, plan on coming by the anchorage just South of Lake Worth inlet - I'll help provision with a car and a costco or sam's card. Have a safe trip.
My wife and I are Stuart-ites, and have lived there for about fifteen years. We know the area pretty well, and will be able to give you some useful information.
Also, you have been in contact with Stuart Bell. I've met him, and he is extremely knowledgeable about the area. Between us, you should be able to learn quite a bit.
Hi Debbie, Thanks for the compliment on my web site. I sold my boat in October so if you want crew anytime just email me and I'm off!!!

I would try a couple of places near the base of the Roosevelt Bridge:
1. City of Stuart Marina - west side of bridge. They are doing a large re-model, and they may not be open at this tiime.
2. Harborage Marina - east side of Roosevelt Bridge....probably $2/foot also, but they are pretty empty, so who knows?
3. Dockside Marina - further west than City Marina.
4. Another marina (can't remember the name) that is behind the old Jack Baker's restaurant. It's a hole in the wall, and if they have something, it's probably inexpensive.
Hey Debbie! We are also in Alicetown. We got here at the end of the day and just cleared customs. We're at the end of the Weeche's Dock, right by the channel. Call us on 16 tomorrow. What's the name of your boat?
debbie--i sicced the emperor and his minion on ya----they should be able to help ya!!!
i donot know if you have internets where you are--i know you are being towed to descanso----he can still access you----he saw ya being towed by his trimaeran--i donot know if there is any internet in descanso---i hope you are able to get this!!!!
you are in an anchorage that will be bumpy but good---they place folks who cannot mobilize immediately into descanso bay--wind is frpom n-nw, and you are safe---it venturis over mts--gusts will keeep ya awake--will be choppy--you got there at the right time.....trisum is on the path you followed on tow in--he is showing films in the casino tonight---so he will find you -- how long are you staying??? cell service in descanso is spotty but there....he knows someone who sews and a mechanic if you need......15 kts tomorrow---down from today---worst part is tonite....this is last winter storm.......
just talked with steve again and gave him mooring number but he will findja even if they move ya--he knows all--more even than a momma...and mommas know EVERYTHING!!!!!!!
ok he will findja...i told him mooring number ---so i guess will be smoother than descanso---gooood---near casino is good spot for this weather....worst will be tonite and get down to 15 kts tomorrow.....choppy but tolerable....are you in the cal??
by the way--have fun---steve is also found in the thrift shop as the manager..everyone knows him--he does almost everything and knows everything--and will make sure you have a good visit.
deb--i copied and deleted the message so the fone number isnt on some bathroom wall--and i called and gave it to steve----the thrift store is the hospital auxiliary thrift store--should be easy to find as there is no way anyone usually gets by steve.....i think the delay is due to weather conditions--windy out there and choppy.....are you still under double red flags????
uhoh--guy named kenneth in mission bay--did he used to have a bird???
if so, is doing well......
i am surprised steve hasnt gotten hold of you by now.....strange--there have beeen strange happenings in the town for a bit......he has been very busy with town stuff......but he usually gets a bit of to do stuff if it isnt tooo windy or messy weatherwise...
i will relay the message to ken......i hope all goes well on the way home--is a long way----be safe.....fair winds.....let me kniw how the ride home is!!..i used to have my boat in king harbor for a bit in 1991...then marina del rey then lost angeles then fish harbor then dago.........
www.pacificsailtrader.com----i was just turned on to these folks for used sails-----check them out----you and i now have similar needs-----a mainsail for our boats!!----i hope all went well and that the trip across teh damnable indecent channel went well ---a friend of mine was knocked down thwere the same friday american pride sprung a plank---is such a normal everyday thing, but santa barbara channel is nothing to snicker at----hope she was easy onya!!!!
gooood ya got across alll fine---glad you had a goood trip---we will meet someday---even if ya drive down here for a visit or something----i do not have a car today so i can say that!!! maybe after today i might have one----sounds like everyone has the dollar problem--just no tenough of them---aig musta taken them allllllllllll...........!!!!
hi debbie--my formosa was from sta barbara---a friend of mine used to live there now is wandering--i donot cross paths much with the ken i am thinking you mean--did he have awhitre bird without feathers on its chest??
\ or talk of a bird died in a boat explosion?? if so, i donot cross his path .....but i put word out for you......we travel in waaaaay different circles. santa barbara is gorgeous but i donot go there at all......too far north---i lived in redondo in king harbor for a while in 1991....3 mos---didnt like it---electric bill was waaaayyyy tooo high!!!!! i used only one lightbulb and the bill was 85 dollars!!!!!! i figgered it was gouging and left---went to mdr----and stayed one year then left --didnt like it--liked fish harbor, port of lost angeles best.....less intrusive!!
gettijng my engine for formosa this week if all goes right----wooohoooo!!!!
so they still allow anchoring in redondo beach --still in the approach to the marinas?? near where poncho and wongs used to be??
then was chillers for a while--near the lagoon the wet t shirt contests and bikini contests used to be in??

Where do you want to be? Palm Beach is really upper-crust, and they will ding you.
The farther north from Palm Beach, the lower the rates will be. There are some places both north and south of PB that ought to have lower rates.
What do you want to see in S. Florida? Gimme' some clues and I'll try to help.
