Long Island Sound

Sailors all around Long Island Sound
  • nauticalrich

We need to get more members to start a good discussion. I'm trying to find them.

I've sailed, both racing and cruising, LI Sound for over 20 years. My primary choices for destinations and sailing are all in the eastern end but there is great sailing and numerous places to go all along the way. It is a great place to have a boat.
  • Ambition

20+ years here as well.. Some call it the Caribbean of the North. ;-)
  • Joe Cavar

Well, I'm a complete newbie at sailing and boat-owning, but very happy to be here nonetheless!
  • Suky

Lifetime on Long Island sound - know it from Throgs Neck Bridge to the Gut...
    both north and south coasts.
  • Suky

Been based east of Plum Gut for last 10 years.. Gardiners Island, Block Island, Shelter Island.. go thru the Gut and head for Coecles Harbor.. oooppps.. well, not LI sound.. but a close place to venture to from LI Sound.

Little by little, my summertime cruising plans are starting to take shape, and on my short list of places to go this year is Greenport/Southold/Shelter Island. I'll be sure to beep the horn if I'm in the neighborhood.

We plan to do the L.I.S. cruise from Forked River (Barnegat Bay) the week of June 27th to the 4th July. Any good places to visit/dine/hang out?

I'm a BIG fan of Milford. A wonderful, friendly, relatively inexpensive marina (Milford Landing) with lots of good restaurants and other amenities within short walking distance. (Cancun Charlie's is a favorite.) From Milford you can harbor-hop further east to Old Saybrook, Essex, Mystic, Stonington, etc., or bounce across the Sound to Port Jeff and other spots. Have a great trip.

Carole...We sail in Barnegat as well and are planning the same cruise. However, we are unable to do it this summer. Our cruise was to include Mystic, Port Jefferson, Mattatuck, and eventually off to Block Island. I will be interested to hear how you made out....What type of boat do you have and where do you keep her?

I crew for a friend, on a 37 Bennie (2007) DRAC VERD, kept at Tall Oaks in Forked River. Great boat. She is a smooth sailor and fast. The TOYC will do a group cruise up to LIS the week of the "4th". Usually from 4 to 6 boats do the cruises and they all enjoy a good happy hour in dock/mooring after a days sail.
    All the best, Carole

Heading up to the summer slip in Westport from the winter slip in Jersey City this weekend. Hope to be doing a fair amount of cruising in the Sound and up through Martha's Vineyard. Usually have room for a few more crew.
  • nauticalrich

Art, let us know when and where you are going. Maybe some of us can meet up.

    Hey guys
    great weekend
  • carole lowry

We just got back this afternoon, from an 8 day cruise on the LIS. Great week. We decided just to sail each day and see how far we got before stopping for the nite. Went up as far as Oyster Bay with stops at Atlantic Highlands and City Island along the way. Homeward after cruising past the Great Lady of NY/NJ and spectacular fireworks at Atlantic Highlands. On to Manasquan in NJ and a second nite of fire-works at Tom's River anchorage before slowly returning to our home port of Forked River, NJ. Did "Hell Gate" for the first time and saw 12 knots over the ground. What an experience. Three great navigators (3 boats on the cruise) took us in with the current and out with the current 4 days apart. Would do it again.

    Hi nauticalrich

I returned to Westport from Costa Rica, my other home in early June. The weather has been terrible and I've been out racing at Block Island and trying to work on the boat. At the moment 4 of the hatches and 12 portlights are down in Annapolis getting new lenses and gaskets. I hope to get them back and installed this week. After that it would be great to get out. I'm over in Bermuda Lagoon at a private slip.

Are you in Setauket Harbor? That looks a little tricky for a 6' draft entering at other than hide tide...or are you in Port Jeff harbor? How are the ferry wakes on a mooring?

Just got word that all the hatches and portlights are done and are on their way up.

By the 29th I'll probably be out at Block, Cuttyhunk or the Vineyard. After that will be heading down to the Chesapeake....but if I'm still in the area we'll head over on the 29th.
  • Michael Cioffi

Im in Port Jeff Harbor, plenty of water and mellow wakes.

Will be driving to Oyster Bay. No boat trip this time. Also, not my book another author. History of Theodore Roosevelt's work with conservation and the Nat'l Parks.
