    Hi All,
Just found SeaKnots and this group
Owner of a great Cal-31 in Las Vegas NV
  • Leonard Reeves

    Howzit Kevin,
Welcome to the Cal forum. We've got a T/2, but have heard great things about the 31. Not too much activity here, but enough to stay around. Weather in Hawaii has been typical winter, save the above average number of high surf events. Surfers are scoring this year! Not sure which area that you're sailing in but I am sure that the Cal 31 is doing you right. Hope to see some pics of your boat.
    Aloha ka'kou,
    Leonard

  • Kevin Oelschlager

    Thanks for the "welcome" Leonard.
I named my boat after my favorite place in the world, you may know it ;-)
Every year I want to put her back on the So Cal coast but the $$$$ is too much

    Hi Walter,
I am on the yahoo group, just not very active
I just returned from Key West. Had a chartered 47' lagoon that we took to the Dry Tortugas and then watched some races "Race Week" and of course the Duval Crawl
Let me know if you need crew!

    Howzit Cal Sailors,
Nice Boats there boys! Great to see a little roll call on here.. We snuck in a motor/sail before the game yesterday and picked up a small(10#) Mahi. Good pupu's for the game , which came on at 1:30p.m. our time. Kona is a little too hot for me, but still part of one of the greatest places on the planet! Keep the pictures coming. Great ! We've got a 2/29 and a couple of Cal20's in our harbor, but no 31's. You guys enjoy the El Nino weather.
    Aloha ka'kou,
    Leonard

    hello all,
i have a cal 29 1972 , wondering if anybody knows were to get the original dodger for her ? thanks the matty j
  • Jim Buce

Any Cal 34 owners out there? Would love to see what you all have done to your boats.
  • Ken Roberts

Jim, we are Cal 34 owners out of Redondo Beach, CA. Have owned her for the past 5 years (67 Cal 34 - Hull 75, a good old classic boat!). Some of the work we've done for her are:

    1. Repaint Hull with Algrip
    2. Re done all standing rigging
    3. Repaint bottom
    4. Add Electronics - ie. Chart Plotter with Temp & Depth Transducer; upgraded Tiller autopilot
    5. Adding running water (cold) to Galley
    6. Added footpumb to Head Sink

I can send you pictures of the boat if you'd like.

  • Jim Buce

    Hey Ken,
Would love to see pics of the boat. I have been refitting Skylark (68 Cal 34 Hull 186) for close to 2 years now. Have done a lot of the same work you have done and then some. She had sat for a long time before I found her. They are such great boats. Do you still have the old A4 running?

I have a blog that shows everything I have done if you would like to see pics. http://skylarkadventures.blogspot.com/ We just finished a trip down from Washington, NC to Jacksonville, FL. That was a hoot as well.

    Jim
    s/v Skylark
  • Ken Roberts

Bruce, I was forturnate when I purchased the boat, the previous owners had re-powered the engine from the A4 to a Yanmar 3GM30F, which runs the boat quite nice. We are the 3rd owner of the boat and the previousl owners seemed quite adapt at keeping the boat up. The owner who we purchased the boat from didn't sail the boat much, as he was older, using the boat as a platform and did a lot of kyacking.
  • Jim Buce

    Ken,
A re-power is next on the list for sure. The A4 gave her final performance on the trip down. Have to wait a while to build the funds up a bit, but I am hoping to have something underway by early next year.
  • Ken Roberts

Bruce, a repower will make a hugh difference in time, effort and maintainance. I also wanted you to know that you can see some pictures of Finisterre in my home page -- I'll take some of the in interior this week and post them. One of the things I have found, especally with the Cal 34 series is not a lot of support in the web. There are some user forums, but for the amount of owners with 34's out there, not a lot of communications between each other. When I had a Columbia 26 - there was a huge amount of user assistance on the "how to's etc". I work on my boat a lot, feel free to ask questions etc. if you need any help.
  • Jim Buce

Ken, looked at your pics, she looks great. So from what I can tell, you painted the deck and the non-skid areas all white? I like that a lot. Re-doing the deck is on the short list as well, and I was looking for ideas.
Agree with you completely about there being very little support for the 34 models. Everyone seems to have a 25, 30 or something in between, I appreciate your offer for help.
How do you fare in CA without a bimini? In FL, it's a must. I use a boom tarp when at the dock or at anchor, but it's a pain to put up and take down...especially if there is any wind.
    --Jim
  • Ken Roberts

Bruce, to the paint, we painted the HULL white, non-skid deck is a Slight tan color mixed with non-skid. and the trim the green ... she does look great and anyone who see's her is shocked at her age. I have a dodger and a sumbrella sun cover for the times were at anchor or in the marina and really hot needing some relief. Were planning on modifying it with some side drape to cut the direct sun in the a.m. and p.m. it fits up and over the boom, extending to the back stay.

I have a Cal 31' Sloop 1979. I'm outfitting her to cross the pacific over to Australia and i can't seem to find any Cal 31's that have done major crossings. Anyone know about Cal 31's sailing to Hawaii or Beyond. Any help would be great.

Aloha ka'kou Cal people. Hope everyone had a great summer. Sailing has been great, as usual. Fishing , not so much. No good size fish(25#) since July. Bunch of AKU (skipjack tuna) since then. MahiMahi season is coming back around next month. Can't wait!

    Howzit Cal people,
Looking for info on Cal 2-30. We may be moving up sooner rather than later... Specifically keel attachment (integrated or bolts). Also headroom and a definitive beam. Anybody? Bradley, you still out there?
    Mahalo for any,
    LR

    .
  • Kevin Oelschlager

Even though that is the predesessor to my Cal 31 I will claim no factual knowledge about the boat. Mine is an encapsulated lead keel with no beam.
Have you looked on the Yahoo site?
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Cal_Boats/
more than likely it would be found in a past thread

    Hey Everyone,

New guy here.  Currently sailing (and selling) a completely re-fit Tartan 27.  Looking to move up to a Cal 34 / 35.  Wanted to know some thoughts from those of you who have one.  I'm looking to live aboard and I really like the layout of the Cruising Cal 35 but can't find many.  Are the 1980's Cal 35's still Lapworth Design's.  Any input is appreciated. Thanks

    Hey Everyone,

I just bought a 1968 Cal 2-30 and so far am loving it. She'll need some winter TLC but come spring, she'll be a thing of beauty!

    Scot

  • Scot Henry

Ok so first weekend out on my new to me Cal 2-30 and I noticed that the tiller really pulls (under power more so due to propwash), but even undersail, once the tiller leaves center position it grabs and pulls hard off center. I can feel the rudder pulling off center at all times, she turns effectively both directions but won't stay centered. is this a bearing, bushing, alignment problem. She comes out of the water in a few weeks and I'll have a look to see what the problem may be, but thought I'd ask for advice in the meantime. Any ideas?
  • Chris DiCroce

John,  I'm so sorry to hear that your health is causing you to consider selling your boat.  That just makes me sad.  I sent you a friend request.  It's been a while since I've been on here... I hope you are ok, in Florida maybe? Thanks

    Howzit ALL,

Hope this finds everybody well, especially you John,. Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and enjoyed the day. We got in a short sail and actually caught a small(12#) mahimahi. Was a good change from the leftover turkey. We ate it on saturday watching Hawaii'i football. Anyway, we've moved to Cal 2/29 and couldn't be more pleased. Picked it up in July and have been sailing hard ever since. However, we need to get some paint on the topsides and was wondering if anyone knows the Cal blue color? Looks like a standard on many Cal boats. Any help is appreciated. Good Holidays to all.

    Howzit Kevin,

Haven't been on this site since last post  ,but our 2/29 is looking good. Went sailing past Sunday with small craft and huge swell. Was fun! No fish to report but the sailing is great. The 2/29 is  a lot more boat than the 27. Very solid sailor with just enough headroom for me. We're loving it. Hope that "Kona" is all good for you. Have fun in Vegas!

  • Solo Voyager

Thank you! Kona is doing good. Resting in Bali Marina since April 3, 2011. Will be here until mid-March before heading out to Papua this year. Great place to sail here but a bit too hot and humid to my liking.

  • John Berens

Health forces this...check out Annapolisyachtsales and see my Cal 34.  If you know of someone looking for a very special boat, pass the word.

Was wondering if there were any cal 31 owners who could comment on how well the deck and structural wood work is holding up.  I may look at a cal 31 and would like to know if there are any problems w the boat.  I bought a cal 29 years ago that was in bad shape and would like to avoid the same issues(waterlogged core in deck and rotted bulkheads)

  • Allan Diaz

    Hi Everyone,

I am new to Sea Knots.  I bought/found a 1972 Cal 29 and I would like to contact other Cal 29 and 2-29 owners.  I am berthed in the San Francisco Bay in the San Leandro Marina.  I have several questions and curiosities that can best be answered by current owners.  I would also like to check out their boats too, as I try to restore my boat.  I have not named my boat and the old name is so faded away that I hope to come up with her new name soon.  If you are or were an owner, please reply.

    Thanks,

    Allan
