The VOR events in Baltimore & Annapolis were HUGE!.
I was the local liazon for the PRO for the event in the acquisition of volunteers and their vessels to assist with the one the water activities. Peter Craig, from Marblehead Mass was the PRO for these two events in '02 and '06 as well as the last Whitbread in '98 where I had the same task for him.
The on the water events are predicted to be smaller for the '09 Boston VOR visit than the Balto/Annapolis events as there are few boats dewinterized and ready for sailing in April in Boston. That was based on port observations last April.
It would be great to see a better showing and send the VOR race off with the surprise of a huge on-the-water presence.
There will also be a call for volunteers to assist with the Boston event. The benefits of being a volunteer should get you more access to the boats and crews that is exclusive to public access.
I'm sure the VOR land venue will be excellent with prize giving for the preceding leg, press converences and parties. The visitor draw should be in the hundreds of thousands as was the Balrimore/Annapolis visit.
It looks like the India restart will overtake the Annapolis restarts in the past with the most spectators. The '98 Whitbread and '06 VOR restart was the previous record for spectators for a sailboat race with the numbers being somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 people watching the restart due to a coinciding event of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk & Sandy Point Festival. There were at least 1200 boats on the water for the Annapolis restart.
If anyone is interested in volunteering for the event in Boston, you should contact Premiere Racing in Marblehead.
