Hi all,

I thought it would be interesting to have a discussion about perfomance tips. I know we have a cruiser boat... but it's always fun to get the best out of it!

My first tip would be to fine tune the sails using the Beneteau Sail trimming guide that can be found here:

Feel free to share your tips with us!

Regards,

Don.

Ed, the racer boy in you is coming out. Or did it never really go away? LOL No modifications on our part. I'm not a racer although if there's another boat running with us I'll try my best to beat them. I won't spend any money on the sails since I'm pretty satisfied with how she moves already. I'd love to have genoa cars that are adjustable from the cockpit but since Lewmar doesn't make them, and I'm not going to invest in Harken's track and cars, I'll just have to deal with things the way they are. Occasionally I'll tweek the cars while under sail but since I don't always trust the admiral not to fall off while I'm tinkering I just forego the performance at that moment.

As for fearing an accidental gybe, yes I understand. I always snug up on the mainsheet and adjust the traveller accordingly to prevent it from happening. Even so there's a lot of power in the main and I have no doubt it would cause some damage if it were to be allowed to gybe too hard in heavy winds.

BTW we have a 43 which is a little heavier than the 40 but we don't have any issues with her listing to either side. I have 4 Trojan T105 6V batteries installed. Two are in where the original 4D was with the others on center line under the aft bunk.

Hello Ed,

I am now in the process of changing for  adjustable backstays.

I am reluctant to go for inverses Y setup since it will interfere with the bimini that we use a lot in the med.

Would you have pictures of your adjustable backstay.

The alternative would be to keep the double backstay and use two hydraulic cylinders connected to one pump.

Did you consider this option?

Thank you for your help.

Hi to all. I'm just getting time to go through some of the discussions. I'm still getting to know my b40. We were out one day with 21-22kts, gusting to about25,we had jib cars all the way back, furled jib and main to just past second reef mark. At 35-40 degrees were doing about a solid 9 and never heeled more than 15-17 degrees. Waves were about 6-8' with a couple of 10 footers rolling by us. I was pretty impressed. The boat felt like it was stuck at 15-17 degree of heel and very mild helm. Is this pretty much what you guys are seeing also.

I would like to improve the light air performance of my B40 with furling main.  I am giving thought to upgrading the jib to better quality and maybe increase to 150%.  Don't believe there's much to be gained from upgrading the furling main. Any ideas?

Spinnaker?

I got myself an asymmetric spinnaker from Neil Pryde with a dousing sock (must!). That almost doubles the speed in light air (4-8 knots), providing I have an acceptable wind angle.
