SeaKnots

Hi,

After motoring for around one hour in our B40, we have an unpleasant diesel smell in the aft cabin.

Did anyone experienced this?

Do I have to check for engine leaks, exhaust problems or others I did not think of...?

Thanks in advance!

Donizetti.

Is the odor that of fuel or exhaust? If fuel then pull up the aft bunk mattress and look under the boards at the foot of the bed. Check for any signs of leaking fuel from any of the fittings, fuel level sensor, etc. If it's an exhaust odor then check to make sure the engine exhaust fan is working. There are two fans. One brings in fresh air, the other removes hot air from the engine compartment. If the one that removes the air isn't working then it's possible the intake fan is bringing in exhaust, especially if you've been motoring downwind.

Good luck

Mike

Mike,

You have fans on your ducting? Did you add them as I have no fans at all on our 43. I thought it was strange since my prior boat was a 331 and had an exhaust fan.

Regarding the smell when motoring down wind, we get situations where we have our exhaust fumes blow back down the companionway or as you stated, blow back down the ducting.

Fred

Fred yes we do have fans. You can hear them when you turn on the key prior to actually starting the engine. You can also see them but you have to crawl back into the compartment aft of the Port locker.

Not much you can do about the exhaust fumes blowing back at you and down into the boat. The only option is to fall off from dead down wind when motoring. Not really an option on most days.

Mike

I used to hear them in my other boat just as you stated above but I just finished tearing up the aft bunk area to install an inverter and run the electricals and no fans in my boat.. Just duct. I doubt they'll do anything about it at this point. Our run back is also typically dead down wind  so we just keep the forward hatch open to draft air through the boat.

Thanks Mike, after checking the diesel smell from the filler, it's definitely not diesel, so probably exhaust fumes. I do hear a fan, but not sure if I hear both fans. Will check and post back.

Thanks again!

Yep my B40 US built version has an engine fan. Check for a blown fuse located near the house battery. I lived 3 years with my 2008 and thought it curious that I never heard the fan. Concluded the builder found an extra quite fan to avoid the annoying sound. Earlier this year my service manage recommended checking the fuse and that was the problem. Now I have the comforting but annoying fan sound when the engine is running.

And no I've not experienced any diesel oder.
