DMS30 Sounder

I just discover this group and I hope to share great information about our boat. Me and my wife own an Oceanis 40 (hull no 737)  from June 2010 and we had a problem in November when the keel hit a rock at 6 knots at 3 am. We were 4 on board and we all were very lucky - only one of us had to stop a small cut in the forehead ... But our boat suffered in the inner mould and is being repaired. Both the insurance company and the shipyard told us that there is nothing that can not be repaired in the fibreglass and we are confident that our boat will be in full condition when we take it again next February... Going to the subject of this post, we are taking the opportunity to make some additions. We want to add one DMS30 sounder to our C90W chart-plotter. My wife likes diving and the depth sounder was something we had in mind from the beginning. I already sent the required thru-hull transducer (P319) to the shipyard but at this moment I am very worried about making a 2 inches hole on the hull. I am about 1.500 miles from the repairing shipyard and I can not inspect the boat as I wanted. I remember that there is a depth transducer beneath the floor as we enter in the front cabin.

Question 1 : shall I ask the shipyard to make a second hole to place the new transducer near the old one?
Question 2 : would it not be possible to replace the existing transducer (that supplies information to the SeaTalkNG bus) with the one that will feed the DMS30? Or I will loss the depth data on the instruments?

I have many other thinks to ask but for the moment I stop here. Many thanks in advance for any tip on this subject.

Hi Luis

There is a depth/ temperature sounder and a speed log as you say, just as you enter the fwd cabin.   I had a fish finder sounder put in on our boat and it talks directly to the plotter C80. I am pretty sure the hole is close to the existing ones. I am going out for a couple of days and will let you know what I find next week if that helps.  I seem to recall the depth on the fish sounder seems to match the depths on the instruments so maybe one has replaced the other.  I will let you know.

I will look forward hearing from you. If your sounder is a DMS30 black box from Raymarine and if you know where it was installed, please also tell me where the sounder was installed. I am planning to use a 3G router with WiFi with 4 Lan ports (4 port ethernet switch). 2 of these ports will be used to connect the sounder and of the chartplotter (using Seatalk HS). In the end I want to be able to run the Raymarine RNS software in my laptop without any wires. But at this moment (while the boat is out of water) my main concern is to decide where and how to install the transducer.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.  My new sender is about 300mm in front of the two existing ones and slightly inboard.  Hope this helps.
