no chuck, it appears no one knows what happened to snik (John) all I know is that a few years ago he was winding up his apartment & moving on....seems the property mgmt job didn't work out for him.....he was planning to visit his mother @ her home in Alabama then head to S.F. to meet up with a buddy, help him finish getting his boat ready so they would sail to HI......I only know that shortly before going to AL he was in hospital for some heart issues.....is not like him to simply cop out of keeping in touch online...so can only surmise that he had a heart attack & has died.....that's all I know
hey chuck, hope yer gettin some fishin in finally. get that boat squared away and dependable? last i heard snik was considerin sailin off to hawaii with an old salt who needed crew on an old boat, i ferget what kind of boat but was around 50 footer or so, ole wood blocks and ancient riggin. lol. was goin up to see his mom in i think was arkansas, possiblyto move his possessions there before th sail. mr. steve knight might know more fer certain as ive not been around here much lately keepin up-to-date. im on th road (aaaaaargh, rather than underway) runnin back in forth to louisiana. lol if we cant get th rain in texas, i'll go to th rain. nuthin like a good rain.......take care

It's been cool but sunny the last few days. I'm always working on the boat, not like I"ve got anything else to do. Squid bars? Where's that come from? A place where swabbies hang out? Been a while since I"ve been to one, other than these dives we have around here.
I'm going for a headset /mic tomorrow and when I get that I will have skype set up soon.
I'm moving up in the world. LOL Beautiful two days here. Went Spitfire driving .. blue lips and ears but permenantly engraved frozen grin on face.. Life is still good even if the boat is under a tarp. :-)
it was good to hear from you on the phone.
I don't think this storm will be anything like a Katrina, winds and a foot of rain. At least I don't have the stress of taking care of a boat.
No problem Dan. I don't want to sound like a crusty old salt, but I was like you, wanting to see more of Georgia. Back in the early 90's, my girlfriend and I spent my vacation traveling down the east coast visiting places I thought we would like to see. Actually, I personally, was looking for a place to move to. I was living in Ohio and hated it. For her it was just a vacation. I had my 20 foot power boat with us and we explored the ICWW from Merytle Beach to Savannah. We got down to Savannah and decided to do the 90 miles to Jekyle Isle on the ICWW. That was a long trip with not much to see but trees. With only an 18" draft, depth wasn't an issue. Once we got to Jeykle, we were less than impressed. I guess it would be great if you lived there, but as tourists, not a lot to do or see. It's just a large residential island full of mansions.
Years later, in 06, I made the trip again only going north. Having visited Savannah a couple of times, I thought I'd like to live there. All I'll say about Savannah, is, it's one thing to visit, a whole nother thing to actually live there.
Yeah, you don't utter the word "liveaboard" in the state of Georgia. I don't know why they adopted that law, it makes no sense. It should be a local thing if at all.
When I came back up with my trawler, that 4' draft brought to light just how shallow it really was in the ICW. The problem is, they (gov) aren't doing any dredging or up keep in the ICW, especially in Ga. Not sure why but I have my therory's. Don't get me wrong, lots of folks still travel it, but you just have to be aware and have a good depth finder, and travel during high tide in some areas. If you still want to do the ICW, let me know and I'll pass along some areas you need to be really carefull in.
Another thing you have to be aware of is the height of the tides around the Savannah areas and farther south. We're talking 7 to 9 ft. That causes the ICW to really run hard, especially under some of the bridges, where the channel gets really skinny. I had a 120 hp 6 cyl diesel in my boat and it brought me to a dead stop and started pushing me backwards while under full power. That was interesting.
Anyway, it's all in a days work on a boat, doing the ICW.

Hey Chuck,
Thanks for the words of wisdom. I've only been as far south as Jekyll Island and I liked it. I'll take your advice and explore other areas this winter. The plan is to cruise south next october. But I'll drive down this winter and nose around. The marina at Jekyll Island uses the term "extended transients," rather than liveaboard. I didnt realize the law was that old, I thought it was a recent developement. I think the law should exclude marinas. Every ICW cruiser I've talked with says that shallow and shoaling is the biggest concern. I have a sailboat with 3.5' draft, full keel; not as bad as some, worse than others I guess. Thanks again.

"I had to replace my sheeve on both sides and really struggled to get the bolts out. Once I had them out, each was bent thus the challenge. I ended up stripping one or two of the hex bolts and used an angle grinder to square off the head of the bolt…"
The starboard side of my Traveller is starting to lift up. I am guessing to remove the center 5mm Allen bolt that goes through the middle of the sheeves, although I cannot get it to budge, to access it. Does anyone have any experience with this??Thanks Dave B43 Shore's AdriftSee More

I hope that Ida doesn't inflict too much damage down south.
