One Day....is next week! It's actually happening!

Dreams can come true. My husband Franc and I are about to take off for an absolutely amazing journey. A once in a lifetime opportunity and all for a wonderful cause. We are set out to make a difference in the world greater and larger than anything we could have imagined. We are two people set out to make two of our dreams come true, together.

It started with a twinkle in our eyes and the conversations always went like this, "One day...". That one day was always a day that we thought of - perhap… Continue

Waking up in a beautiful bay

Every day that I wake up away from the city chaos is a day that I take the time to enjoy and take it all in. Today for instance, the weather isn't beaming sunshine yet when I woke up and looked out the porthole, it was just magical.

It reminded me of the beauty life has to offer if you step back and take a few moments to appreciate it.… Continue

Our weekend trip to the Hook

We made plans with Chuck and Sandra on s/v Eliora to go down to the Hook and back. Having similar sized boats, it's great fun to sail together.

Saturday was a beautiful, sunny day. We didn't need the motor at all. There was another interesting fact. Usually when we reach the point of Sandy Hook we get attacked by these biting bugs. For… Continue

Meeting the Crew of s/v Victoria: 7-27-08

Today was an unexpected surprise. Franc and I had met our friends John and Emily on s/v Jezebel in Manhasset Bay for dinner last evening. It was so great to see them because they were not able to make the Summer Equator dinner last weekend. As always, we had a lovely time. What was an unexpected bonus was to meet the guests that they were goi… Continue

Is there a formula for creating one of the most memorable marina nights?

We hosted cocktails on Can Drac on a Saturday evening and that evening is one that would not soon be forgotten. It made me think...Is there a formula for creating one of the most memorable marina nights? How does the weather, food, friends, drinks and entertainment come into play? Let’s see…

Great weather? We had planned to have a relaxing get together in the cockpit under the stars with our friends. It unexpectedly started to rain just before everyone started to arrive. We were worried that th… Continue

*Sailing vs. Racing vs. Cruising*

I was in. A whole new world had opened up and welcomed me in. I was sailing. Sailing, sailing, sailing. Up until that point I was just enjoying the pure wind upon my face, I was sailing. I quickly found out that it wasn't just about sailing though. There were a few different aspects to sailing. In the Manhattan Yacht Club I found that there were 2 basic types of boaters. Racers or Cruisers.

I wasn't sure what I was yet. I just started. I just knew I had to be out on the water and at this point,… Continue

*Entry Point into Sailing*

From afar, I always thought that sailing was so elegant, peaceful and that you had to be rich to be able to enter into it. This was of course from afar before I had become a sailor myself in 2000. Any reference to sailing in the media shows beautiful, happy people on a large sailing yacht sipping wine and enjoying the wind upon the sails. I am not sure that the media (or the media that I had paid attention to) had really shown me any other side to sailing.

As a child growing up near the water I… Continue

Newport is doing well. The new restaurant has changed things a little, but we still have fun. I have met Dan and Patrice and talk often. They are great. I read about your adventure over the last several months. Good for both of you!! That is quite an accomplishment. Are you coming around for a visit?

How cool is that! It's a lovely shot so I was glad to include it. And, i didn't notice that CanDrac was in the Arc shot! Nice!
Hope you two are having fun still!

I can't tell you how many times Patrice and I have talked about flying down and surprising you at Soper's Hole next weekend. It's too bad the timing didn't work out better.

Hey Andrea - I love Staniel Cay! I can so picture sitting there with you and Franc two years ago - wow! I am in Bequia in the Grenadines, leaving tomorrow for either Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, or Union Island. All are within 30 miles of here and downwind, so it should be an easy day. Have Chuck and Sandra been there yet? If not make sure to say "Hi" for me! MK

Andrea,

Thanks so much for co-founding this great site. A networking site for sailors with features similar to facebook has been on my wishlist for some time now. It's almost like getting a Chistmas present. Happy Holidays to both of you!

Andrea,

Thanks for the note and I hope all is well. I couldn't help thinking of Bill as I watched the Baltimore/Washington game last night!! It's cold here. That is it is in the high 50's to low 60's at night. I was talking to my bank in Vermont this mornig it was 6 so they didn't seem to see my plight ;-)

Still working on Cayo Mio as the hole in the keel was bigger than I expected. So I have to wait for it to drain and dry out! went to St. Petesburg Boat show this weekend and talked with Bob Bitchen and his wife Jody about publishing another artical in their magazine. It's fun to do.

So life is OK, just trying to get things moving in a positive direction. Keep in touch and

Fair Winds~~~~~

Hi.
The Erickson company is doing a fully waterproof cellphone, but unfortunately it does no float. The shops for all the goodies 4 boats are selling soft waterproof containers for phones, but they are rather bulky. I am using a Ziplock nylon bag, which has an airpocket and will float the cellphone and keep it dry as well....
