About Me:
I've owned Journey, our 28ft islander since 2004. She's a better sailor than me or Al, my husband. We are planning to let her take us to the Bahamas in Nov.'09 for 3 months. She is spoiled, recieving constant attention and numerous upgrades, but she's worth it.

November 2009.... Journey will take Al and I to the Bahamas for a three month adventure. We have moved onboard, last minute details only now. I can hardly believe that after all these months, the time to leave is right around the corner!

Sailblog of S/v Journey

I have a blog over at this site. I'll try to figure out how to post it on this one. Like all blogs, it runs from the bottom to top. There are older posts as well, so have fun looking. Until then, http://www.sailblogs.com/member/svjourney/ Ok, put it in as a rss feed!

Moorehead City to Southport, NC

We made it to Beaufort/Moorhead City this morning, and the weather reports don’t look good for the run offshore. Al and I know our limitations, and being new to the whole offshore run thing, hearing about winds that would be increasing Wednesday morning to 20 knots, with seas 4-6 feet, makes us choose the milder, gentler route. Down the “ditch” we go! We will stay in the ICW until we make Southport, then look at conditions again. Maybe we will get lucky for Thursdays forecast, which is when we w… Continue

Headed to the Bahamas

Our first day on the ICW was fraught with danger and peril. Ok, maybe not so much, but I’ve got to do something to keep you entertained, right? We left under a cloud of fog, so much so that when we looked back at the creek entrance, we could no longer see where it had been. Just like most of our adventures, this gave us the clear feeling there was no turning back. Oh well, onward to the Bahamas we go!
Very soon after entering the Pungo river, we were overtaken by large ominus low clouds. Oh boy,… Continue

Crunch Time!

Well, crunch time is nearing. Our Bahamas sailing trip is closer than ever, and we have been working at a fevered pitch to get everything ready to leave November first. The food is stowed, and Journey was listing comfortably to port. Adding the dingy in the quarterberth to starboard evened her out nicely thoug… Continue

Dancing with Ferrys

We have an impressive ferry system here in North Carolina. Almost every place we sail to is crossed by a ferry path. Maybe it’s me, but I think they’re trying to mow me down. My first time in the death-zone of a ferry was my first time sailing Journey. The wind had decided to quit on us, and as… Continue

Hi MJ... i did get both your notes... i'm hardly on now that I'm aboard but love having comments to read once I do get on.
I am reading Nigel Calder's book right now on Cuba and it seems there are ways to get around going to Cuba... I don't know if I am actually going to get there.... the winter plans are going to unfold on their own... right now, sitting in slip with incredible winds and not going anywhere since waiting for fiberglass work to finish... hopefully Friday...

Hey Martha. You gussed it, I am at McCotters. I like it a lot there, nice people. Thanks for the positive comments about that boat, I have had to put a lot of work into her so far. I like the layout as well...very homey feeling with all the wood, but thats what you get from a late 60s era boat. Have had a tough summer and have not been down as much as I would have liked, but I that should be ending just in time for the nice fall sailing. I hope to see you guys out there some time...
Jim

Foster, use the NMEA 0183 plug. My E120 came with a short data cable that I connected to apx 30' of standard data cable. Unless your AIS indicates a different baud rate make sure you set it to 38400. You'll find the setting in Systems Setup. Mike
