I finally got my new boat (1978 Cape Dory 28) to my home port. The trip went well, faster than I anticipated since I stayed in the ICW and had a friendly current. I bet nobody knew a 9500lb, 22' LWL displacement hull could sail at 7.5kts under onl...

Thanks for all the input, guys. I have decided not to sandblast it and will just scrape/sand it all off instead. I took ownership of her and now have a month to prepare her. I have to take her 20 miles up to Saint Augustine, then out into the Atla...

I would be inclined to use Soda Blast..if I had to do it at all. I'm more in favor of scraping, then sanding with a vacuum rig. Even though it's more work, it's less destructive, if , and I reiterate, if, you take your time, and don't do a rush jo...

would make me sooo nervous--i think i would pass.......would have to be an awesome sandblastwr to not f*** up your hull.......

After much reading and researching I am starting to lean toward agreeing with you guys. If the hull has no blisters or just a few, I will just patch them and then paint it with anti-foul. I have read where people do a barrier coat (even on an old ...

David, As zeehag commented, blisters are only a problem if they are wet. And, if they are, the hull may also be wet. If this is the case, you don't want to barrier coat until the hull is completely dry. This could take from a couple of weeks, with...

blisters only need repair if they are wet--having holes in their centers, or if they tunnel--grow bigger and longer while in the water. is a good idea to add barrier coat to your work list--you will be able to see the blisters despite the paint. w...

Finally

I finally got my new boat (1978 Cape Dory 28) to my home port. The trip went well, faster than I anticipated since I stayed in the ICW and had a friendly current. I bet nobody knew a 9500lb, 22' LWL displacement hull could sail at 7.5kts under only a 135% genoa with 5kts of wind! :) Well, the GPS said so anyways. The speed in the water was about 4.5 kts with the engine at 1/2 throttle motor sailing. The ICW most of the way from Palm Coast to Cape Canaveral is very narrow, probably 500 feet acros… Continue

Maybe a cruising sailboat

Well,

After searching I think I might finally have a cruising sailboat. It is a Cape Dory 28. It's kind of small for circumnavigations, but is a sound enough design to get me to the bahamas and such. I surveyed her myself and I think she is a pretty good deal. The owner was upfront with some problems she has, but the price was set accordingly. I just have to fix the cutlass bearing and repaint the hull. Hopefully there will not be hundreds of blisters under the paint. A few are easy enough to r… Continue

Bummer.

Unfortunately the haul-out revealed that the boat had a bad case of osmostic blistering. It was not structurally dangerous, however from research and talking to people I found that due to the magnitude of the blistering(hundreds of them the size of a dimes and nickels), the water was leeching underneath of the gelcoat and the gelcoat would probably have to be peeled off and the boat re-laminated to effect a permanent repair. If you pressed on one, bubbles would come out adjacent blisters in some… Continue

About to buy a cruising boat.....

Well, after a flurry of activity this past week arranging to sell a motorcycle (SOLD!) and my Catalina 25 Sailboat, I am only a day (or week, depending on when the USCG decides to fax the Abstract of Title) from owning a cruising sailboat. I am excited, yet nervous since I will be spending a big portion of my savings on her. Well, easy come easy go....but I can save again I guess. The current owners seem very nice and they sailed her around the horn of Mexico, through the Panama Canal (Well, had… Continue

I read that if a wave approaches the size of your beam, then you may be toppled. But I think that frequency and shape of the wave matter too. In canoe hulls they talk about primary and secondary stability. My Bayfield is 29' with 10'2" beam; most ...
