I own a 1978 custom built (brown design ) timaran named wanderer II (l.o.a. 40' ,beam 23.5 draft 4.5 with a 2Qm yanmar deisel .She's a dream to sail and tough as nails , I've rode every hurricane out onboard since and including Ivan . we ended up 14 ft above sea level on that one . I was a maritime engineer for 20 years and just can't stay off the water . well I guess I've run my keys enough later . Ron

Recently while at Cape Lookout NC, we experienced some cloud bursts and high winds, flat water because of the heavy rain, could not see 30ft around us. We had 50ft of chain and 30ft rode hitched to a Bruce, so we did not move. I was not worried as we had no boats upwind of us as it was too shallow for anyone other than catamarans. We stayed below, cooked steaks from the freezer and sipped on cold wine. Peter

I'm in the process of planning a multi-year family cruising sabatical with my wife and two kids and, although our experience has historically been with mono-hulls, I'm leaning strongly toward a cruising cat for this purpose. I'm joining the group so as to better educate myself on catamaran specific issues and the best boats, gear, tactics, preparation, etc. My wife and I have sailed together for many years on San Francisco Bay, Carribean bareboats, etc., but she does not have the bluewater passage experience I do, so the learning curve is even more steep for her. We're open to any and all suggestions or comments.

In response to Stephen Phillips' June 29th comment, we recently took our 34' Gemini Cat from Ventura, Ca. up to Vallejo, Ca., in the northern part of San Francisco Bay. Initially, we had a great time up to Point Conception, but after that both the wind and waves took their toll. We motored almost all the way against estimated 10 foot waves that crashed over the boat until we reached Port San Luis, about half-way. After deciding to press on to Monterey, we heard that the conditions were due to further deteriorate and we felt our way back into San Luis Harbor in the dark. Once we were tied up, the three of us exhaled a major sigh of release. We left the boat in Port San Luis for a week when a weather window opened, and we then had a gentle tail wind for over 100 miles up the coast as well as low waves. The next actual problem occurred within six miles of Vallejo in the Sacramento River when the tide, current and winds all fought each other. We actually motorsailed through this maelstrom with the wind at our backs, but it was several miles of steep waves.
I guess the technique I most favored was retreating back to San Luis Harbor to wait out the weather during the first attempt. Safety and fatigue seemed more important than anything else.
The boat itself did well, and it provided us a warm and dry place. The banging in the bridge deck and in the bow from the waves was loud and rough, but there was no damage. Lying in the berth near the bow, I felt as if I had been kicked with some of the waves pounding from underneath. I still think we were better off than in a monohull with the chaos we encountered.

Hi, I have weathered some rough weather at sea on my cat and was wondering if anyone else has and what tactics were used. Just trying to get a feel for how others do things and how they worked. I have hove to, run before, trailed lines and used a parachute. Have not used my drogue yet. I hove to with just the main, how do you do it?

We sailed our multihull from South Africa through Mozambique, Bassas da India, Ille de Europe, Madagascar, Mayotte, Tanzania and Seychelles, and the truth is we would never have sailed if we were on a mono.

While I have sailed my cat as far as from Provo to Stuart, FL by myself,I am seriously searching for a First Mate
