I had a hired captain for the cruise from Guatemala to Florida and his son on that trip. This upcoming adventure will be my first as captain of my own boat and I'm determined to make it alone if compatable crew are not available. Certainly doing one or more of the legs would be reasonable.

Even if you don't make the trip any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, the sassyonesailingatsixty

What a beautiful sailing day !
I was invited to daysail with the neice of a woman I introduced to sailing last August. The neice is the owner of a 1991 Nautor Swan, 44 LOA, slipped in South River, just south of Annapolis. She is planning on taking off in a year or so, to cruise indefinitely.
The weather forecast for yesterday, Sunday, was disappointing ~ only 3 to 5 knots, and a good chance of thunderstorms. I was praying and visualizing better winds and the winds came through. No thunderstorms - turned out the system shifted to the northwest.
We had a beautiful summer day, cloudy but warm, with winds to 20 knots, dropping to 8 just as we sailed within sight of the slip. It was near perfect and pure joy !
I am organizing a couple of woman's cruises this summer and fall and the Chesapeake is one of the places being considered. After yesterday, I would sail there til mid-June and after Labor Day, to avoid black flies, that "hurt when they bite" and too hot temperatures in August. So we're going to go to New England.
btw, our skipper, loaned me 'By the Grace of the Sea', by Pat Henry. Now that I'm back to being a "dirt dweller", I can't wait to dive into it. why i should check and change my oil regularly....tag:seaknots.ning.com,2009-05-03:900123:Topic:805822009-05-03T00:07:50.420ZLOLAhttp://seaknots.ning.com/profile/Lola

Hello sister sailors. Hope to have a topic that shares anchoring tips, tricks and techniques. I'm always interested in learning how other solo-cruisers contend with certain conditions while anchoring or weighing anchor. My own system is simple and easy for me- just hauling the hook up by hand and feeding the chain and nylon rope rode into one of the deck pipes. Angel's main hook is a 27' Bulwagga (my favorite) and she carries a selection of others like a Delta, Fortress, storm, etc. It's easy…
It's easy to haul up "dead boat" as Angel's only 31 feet and medium displacement. But when it's blowing over 20, things get tricky. What do you guys do to circumvent this type of situation? (no, I don't want a windlass for such a small cruiser). Currently, I nudge the throttle just a hair where Angel's barely motoring forward, then quick pull up a bunch of rode with out running it over of course. Sometimes this takes a few trips back and forth from throttle to bow, but it works in its own awkward way. Would love to hear other people's techniques. Anchoring is such a vital thing for cruisers:) And how about having to deal with dragging anchor in a tight cove while having two hooks out? This happened in the Bahamas and the only thing I could do was bouy one, haul the other up and motor away (the bouyed anchor was later retrieved)- what a hassle!
Hello Ladies! I was wondering what your favorite things to do are while on watch and off watch during long passages?

For me, I think I have a lot to learn and acquire on hobbies, etc. For now this is my input:

On watch: (besides sailing) Read up on the destination, magazines, books, fishing or sun tan.

Off watch: all of the above in addition to preparing the meals, cleaning and taking a nap.

In anticipation of this journey, I also brought books on how to learn to sew and how to splice…

I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
