I am installing a NextGen 5.5kw generator in my 2011 B-40 - 2 cabin. I started installation and decided the best location is the cockpit locker approximately 12 inches from the forward bulkhead. To accommodate the height of the generator I will need to cur out a portion of the shelving in the locker.

Has anyone installed a generator in their B 40/43 and any time saving suggestions.

Thanks,

Bruce

I don't know your type of generator. Foster has posted earlier some installation pictures. Please find enclosed some pictures of my installation of Whisper Power 3,5 gen set. It is the same as Mastervolt 3,5. I installed it in the sb aft locker of my B43.

How did you get the mastervolt to fit in the opening of the sb aft locker? I measured mine on my 2 cabin 2011 43' and the opening was only 30" x 14" .

You have to take apart some elements before you put it In the locker. Then remount it inside the locker.

I have a NextGen 5.5kw installed in cockpit locker on my 2010 B40. It's pretty much exactly where you suggest you might install yours.

No need to cut the shelf - at least that's the case in my installation.

Let me know if you'd like to see other pictures / more information.

cheers

Greg

It appears you Next Gen is in the middle of the locker. I am placing my generator forward in the locker to use as much of the remaining space in the locker for storage.

I would like to know where did your raw water thru-hull fitting go and was the installation by you or professionals. If you could provide pics or an explanation of how you routed the plumbing and wiring, that would be a great benefit to me.

Currently, I replaced the half inch floor with with 3/4 inch flooring. I bought additional vibration mounts to further dampen the engine vibration and will glue sound dampening material similar to what is in our engine room to the locker.

Your comments based on practical use of the generator would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Bruce

The fwd end of the generator casing is about 3" off the bulkhead, ventilation hose you can see in the photograph is 3" diameter.

Raw water intake is back aft, just inside the stern compartment. The fwd and inboard bulkheads are both lined with foil backed noise reduction foam. Genny was installed by professional company.

Great pics and really helps me with the install. Thank you.. I see a stainless tube that seems to be supporting the shelf. Did the installers put in that support tube and if so why?

I also do not see the shelf in place. Did that come out?

And have you noticed any problems with sailing or boat balance with the generator in place?

Thanks again,

Bruce

Hi
I installed mine at stern. The Paguro was the only brand that would fit as it is small and light.
The starboard locker is over fuel sender (which I had to replace) so you might check if you still have access.

Are any of you using a generator to start your air conditioners at anchor? Wondering what size generator is needed for that. Thanks!

The generator is a NextGen 5.5 kw. It provides 46 amps of power to both the house and air-conditioning circuits. It handles the air-conditioning and reverse cycle heating very easily with plenty of left over capacity to run the battery charger, microwave, TV and any other AC or DC items we have running, including a AC wet dry vac.

If interested, would be able to provide you with a step by step installation guidelines as I installed this myself with some expert advice and support from a few of my friends.

Thanks, Bruce. 5.5kw must be very big. I have a 3 cabin B43 so I'm afraid I do not have that big locker...

Hi Franc,

I had seen that there was a electronic electric motor "starter regulator" device that allows to start AC or diving compressors with a small (3,5kW) generator. I don't remember the name of the brand but I will try to look for it.

The weight on the technical specifications of generators is always underestimated once you have added the antivibration plate, the starting battery and the exhaust with separator it is hard to go under 120kg. That is why we centered it and put as far as we could from the stern and as low as the hull.

Now we have done two seasons sailing I think it was the right choice. Bigger would be to heavy.

I will come to Catalonia at the end of the month we could discuss this if you want.
